Week 11: Small Steps, Big Strides – The Road to Recovery

Recovery is a journey filled with both triumphs and trials, and Week 11 was no exception.

Friday was another milestone day. My physical therapist cleared me to toe touch with my boot. Woo hoo! This was the first time I had touched the ground with my right leg since September 7. Initially, fear crept in because of the limited mobility in my ankle and my fear of any more potential complications. My surgical wounds are still healing. I can feel the plates underneath my skin. Yes, my brain goes to all the bad things that could happen in the weeks ahead but I tried to stay in the moment. The experience was humbling and exhilarating. It wasn’t smooth or easy, but it was progress and a step towards being able to walk again.

Physical therapy continues to be the cornerstone of my recovery. It’s not just about regaining mobility—it’s about strengthening the foundation that will support me in the months ahead. Using the MedBridge app, I’ve followed a consistent daily routine. The exercises look simple but they are making me work!

If physical therapy represents control and discipline, navigating home care has been the opposite. This week, I found myself once again frustrated by miscommunication. When my scheduled nurse was set to arrive between 6 and 8 p.m. on a Friday, I couldn’t help but question the logic. Why such late hours? Would the blood draw sit overnight?

Despite my frustration, I remained calm and accepted the appointment. To my surprise, the nurse texted to propose an earlier visit. Her professionalism during the visit reminded me that individuals in the system can make a difference, even when the system itself feels broken.

I have learned something about myself and the system every week in this journey. If Week 11 taught me anything, it’s that resilience is an active process. Whether it’s attempting toe yoga (I am still struggling to move my little toes!) or managing home care hurdles, recovery requires patience and persistence in equal measure.

Until next week, be well.
