Week 15: Building Strength One Day at a Time

Fifteen weeks after my injury, I’m reflecting on the small victories and lessons that have defined this stage of my recovery. Each day presents challenges, yet every step forward, whether literal or figurative, reminds me of the resilience we all have within us. This post recaps the past two weeks and the small milestones I have celebrated.

Returning to the gym on December 8 felt like a homecoming. I was nervous but eager, knowing it was a step into the next recovery phase. My workout included familiar movements like pullups, dips, and leg curls, though my right leg’s weakness was a stark reminder of the journey ahead. Still, the joy of moving again was immeasurable, even at a slower pace. Walking on the treadmill for 10 minutes, albeit cautiously, felt like reclaiming a piece of myself.

Physical therapy continues to challenge me in ways that push my limits and inspire growth. Every session, from balancing on a rebounder to practicing single-leg exercises, reminds me of how much progress I’ve made—and how far I still have to go. The small victories, like gaining ankle mobility and improving my proprioception, are the foundation for more significant milestones ahead. I am walking without a cane or walker, focusing on form and strength. It’s slow but steady, and I couldn’t be more grateful.

If there’s one constant in my journey, it’s the impact of nutrition. Eating a plant-forward diet has been a cornerstone of my recovery, helping me maintain strength and minimize muscle loss despite limited mobility early on. As I transition back to more activity, the focus remains on fueling my body to support progress. I have been meal-prepping again, and I love my tofu seasoned with Nutritional Beast (a recipe from Chef Derek Sarno). As much as I ranted about nutrition in the hospital, my goal is to keep people out of the hospital! This means helping educate our community on the importance of nutrition in our everyday lives.

My recovery journey hasn’t been without hurdles. Every challenge has tested patience and resilience, from navigating health insurance issues to learning the nuances of pain management. Yet, these obstacles have also taught me to advocate for myself and embrace a mindset of persistence and adaptability.

Two weekends ago, I did a deep dive on the Virginia Exchange. I will have a new health insurance carrier as of January 1, 2025! My business with United Healthcare is not over; I still have to submit my appeal for the denials of payment. I have had to move beyond the anger and make this an objective business conversation. They are not doing this just to me. I am fortunate to have a voice and am willing to speak up. I have shifted my anger to finding ways to get my finances back on track. This was not an investment I had budgeted for in 2024. My health is priceless, and I am so happy all is going in the right direction. I have set up payment plans to repay the outstanding bills (uggh!). Time to put this in the rearview mirror and keep moving forward.

"You Are a Superhero!" I have to thank my friend M.W. for sending me a beautiful card and motivational message. And a Funko Pop! Honestly, I had never heard of “Funko Pop Yourself” before receiving this beautiful gift. Thank you, M.W., for thinking of me. Your words and your gift mean more than you will ever know.

The progress I’ve made over these 15 weeks is undeniable, but there’s still work to be done, and I am excited about my progress. Exercises like single-leg calf raise, and proper squats are goals I’m actively working toward. My ankle mobility is still limited. My right leg looks a little better but it is still healing. The edema is improving. I have also restarted my recovery routine with my foam roller, sauna blanket and legs up the wall at night.

Recovery and growth aren’t just about the end goal; they’re about the lessons learned along the way. Whether recovering from an injury, pursuing a fitness milestone, or simply striving to improve your health, the path forward is built on consistent effort and belief in your potential.

 “I Believe in Me.”

If you are on a recovery journey, remember to take it one step at a time, celebrate your progress, and never underestimate your ability to overcome life's challenges.

I hope you have a wonderful holiday season. Every day is precious, and this year has reminded me not to take the little things in life for granted.

Until next time, be well.
